Tasbih Yang Kita LupakanThe Forgotten Tasbih

It is at our fingertips every day, yet we rarely realise that tasbih is a way out that Allah Himself names in the Qur'an.

We repeat our tasbih in our daily prayers, but our hearts are elsewhere. We say Subhanallah after prayer, in a hurry, as if it were a habit. Yet this is the very phrase that kept a Prophet company in the belly of a whale, and the phrase Allah taught His Messenger when his chest grew tight.

Penceramah: Prof. Dr Fadil Salih as-Samarra'i (lahir 1933, Samarra, Iraq). PhD nahu (tatabahasa Arab), Universiti Ain Shams, Kaherah (1968); bekas profesor nahu di Universiti Baghdad selama kira-kira 40 tahun; ahli al-Majma' al-'Ilmi al-'Iraqi (Akademi Sains Iraq); pengarang Ma'ani an-Nahw (Makna-makna Nahu) dan at-Ta'bir al-Qur'ani (Gaya Pengungkapan al-Qur'an); dikenali melalui rancangan TV Lamasat Bayaniyyah (Sentuhan Keindahan Bahasa).

Speaker: Prof. Dr Fadil Salih al-Samarra'i (b. 1933, Samarra, Iraq). PhD in Arabic grammar, Ain Shams University, Cairo (1968); professor of grammar at the University of Baghdad for about 40 years; member of the Iraqi Academy of Sciences (al-Majma' al-'Ilmi al-'Iraqi); author of Ma'ani al-Nahw and al-Ta'bir al-Qur'ani; widely known through the TV programme Lamasat Bayaniyya.

The speaker in this video gives one short but deep message: tasbih saves us from grief, hardship and fear. He supports it with three stories from the Qur'an, and points out one subtle choice of words:

✓ Firman Allah: daripada orang yang bertasbih✓ What Allah said: of those who glorify Him

✗ Bukan: daripada orang yang berzikir✗ Not: of those who remember Him

This is the speaker's linguistic observation: Allah names the quality of tasbih specifically as the reason Prophet Yunus was saved.

Nabi Yunus di dalam perut ikanProphet Yunus in the belly of the whale

Kesusahan: al-ghamm (kedukaan yang menyelubungi) dalam tiga kegelapanHardship: al-ghamm (grief that closes in) within three layers of darkness
AyatVerses

"And had he not been of those who exalt Allah, he would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected."

as-Saffat 37:143–144

"...And he called out within the darknesses, "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers." So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers."

al-Anbiya' 21:87–88

💡 Notice: wa kadhalika nunjil-mu'minin (and thus do We save the believers). The promise did not end with Prophet Yunus; it is open to us.

Rasulullah ﷺ dan dada yang sempitThe Prophet ﷺ and a tightened chest

Kesusahan: dhiq as-sadr (sempit dada) kerana kata-kata orangHardship: dhiq as-sadr (a tight chest) because of what people said
AyatVerses

"And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say. So exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him]."

al-Hijr 15:97–98

💡 Notice: Allah did not say "answer them back". The remedy given for a wounded heart is fasabbih (so glorify).

Nabi Musa sebelum berdepan FiraunProphet Musa before facing Pharaoh

Kesusahan: al-khauf (ketakutan) menghadapi tugas yang beratHardship: al-khawf (fear) in the face of a heavy mission
AyatVerses

"Supaya kami sentiasa beribadat dan memujiMu, dan (supaya) kami sentiasa menyebut dan mengingatiMu;"

"That we may exalt You much and remember You much."

Taha 20:33–34 (sebahagian daripada doa Nabi Musa, ayat 25–35)Taha 20:33–34 (part of Prophet Musa's supplication, verses 25–35)

💡 Notice: When asking for Harun as his helper, the purpose Prophet Musa named was that they would glorify Allah much. The speaker concludes that tasbih removes anxiety, grief and fear, and rescues from hardship.

On the meaning of al-musabbihin in as-Saffat 143, Ibn Kathir reports several views:

"It was said: had it not been for the deeds he had done in times of ease ... and in the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas: 'Know Allah in times of ease, and He will know you in times of hardship.'"

"Maka sibukkanlah dirimu dengan mengingati Allah, memuji-Nya, bertasbih kepada-Nya dan beribadah kepada-Nya, iaitu solat."

Betapa Kita Tidak MenghargainyaHow Little We Value It

Apabila hati sesak, kita mencari telefon. Apabila takut, kita mencari orang untuk mengadu. Apabila duka, kita mencari hiburan.

When our hearts feel heavy, we reach for our phones. When we are afraid, we look for someone to complain to. When we grieve, we look for distraction. We try everything, except the one phrase that is lightest on the tongue.

Prophet Yunus had nothing in the belly of the whale: no light, no companion, no way out. All that remained was Subhanaka. And that was enough.

Perhaps we undervalue tasbih because it seems too small. Yet what is small in our eyes is great with Allah. It is not the beads that save, but a heart that truly declares Allah free of every imperfection, and then admits its own.

Perhaps the door out of our hardship has long been at the tip of our tongue. We simply have not knocked on it yet.

4MuhasabahMuhasabah (self-reflection)

  3. Adakah saya "mengenali Allah ketika senang", supaya Dia mengenali saya ketika susah?
  1. When did I last glorify Allah with a present heart, not just counting numbers?
  2. When my chest feels tight, what do I turn to first: people, or Allah?
  3. Do I "know Allah in times of ease", so that He will know me in times of hardship?
